Aan boord zei men weleens Arko = Allemaal reeskak opgelopen.

Greenpeace activists divert Helsinki-bound coal ship.

Early Sunday morning (Nov 01) Greenpeace activists approached the
Finnish-flagged m/s Alppila freighter in an inflatable boat.
One of Greenpeace's better-known activists, Sini Saarela, managed to climb her way aboard the vessel.

After several hours, the Alppila was able to reach Helsinki at around 2 pm local time on the same day.
As the massive freighter approached the harbour, Greenpeace activists in kayaks blocked the vessel.

Police detained nine activists who were taken to the Pasila police station for questioning.

After a similar ship-boarding demonstration in Russian waters two years ago,
Saarela was charged with hooliganism and sat in a Russian jail cell for months.

Greenpeace said it carried out the action because it wants the city of Helsinki to make a
clear decision about how and when the city plans to phase out the use of coal and to shift to renewable energy.

The environmental organisation says it would like to see the city shut down all of
its coal plants in order to pave the way for new forms of energy.

Currently coal power provides roughly half of the city's energy requirements.
Citing a TNS Gallup poll, Greenpeace says that 77 percent of Helsinki residents support a transition to renewable energy.

"The opinion of Helsinki residents is so clear that there is no reason to hesitate,
" Greenpeace's Laura Meller stated in a press release.

"Coal power is not something that belongs in modern cities," she stated.

Indonesia signs contracts to build 24 ships for $130m at local yards.

The Indonesian government has signed contracts worth about IDR1.77 trn ($129.9m) for the construction
of 24 ships that will be used to transport people and goods to and from remote areas in a bid to improve
connectivity among the country’s islands, local reports said.
Funding will come from the state budget over several years until 2017.
Providing a boost to the local shipbuilding industry, companies that won
the contracts include PT Daya Radar Utama, PT Steadfast Marine,
and PT Janata Marina Indah, which will build eight, five and two vessels respectively.

“I hope it can be finished in around two years,” said Transportation Ministry’s director
general for sea transportation Bobby Mamahit.

The projects are part of the government’s plan to build 188 ships this year,
100 of which will be used to serve the remote areas. The government has allocated about IDR 11.84 trn
over three years for the construction of various kinds of ships, namely navigation vessels, patrol vessels and livestock ships.

Mamahit said that the construction of the passenger and freight ships would add to the
56 ships currently owned by the government to serve 96 routes across the country.
Upon completion, those ships will operate in 15 ports in remote areas in Indonesia,
including Sintete in West Kalimantan, Tual in Maluku and Sorong in West Papua.

“As those areas can’t be developed commercially, the government needs to step in [...]
With these additional ships, we can increase the frequency of the movement of goods,
as well as the travel time to the remote ports, from once every two weeks to once every seven days,” he added.

The 24 ships will be 2,000 gt each and will have the capacity to carry 50 tons of cargo as well as 566 passengers.
Indonesian Shipbuilding Association (Iperindo) Chairman said that the shipbuilders welcomed the government’s
ship construction program, as it would also boost the utilization of the shipbuilding capacity that currently stood at 1.2m dwt.

The 50,000 deadweight-tons (dwt), 330,000-barrel-capacity ship named Ohio is the first tanker ever to receive
the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) LNG-Ready Level 1 approval, meaning Crowley has the option to convert
the tanker to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion in the future. The tanker is part of Crowley’s industry-leading,
vessel build program.

The tanker Ohio was constructed by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA,
with construction management services provided by Crowley’s Seattle-based, naval architecture and marine engineering subsidiary Jensen Maritime.
The remaining three product tankers are also being built by APSI for Crowley and have planned deliveries through 2016.

The new tankers are based on a proven Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) design which incorporates numerous fuel efficiency features,
flexible cargo capability and the latest regulatory requirements. Ohio is 600 feet long and is capable of carrying crude oil or refined petroleum products.
The vessel has made two voyages to date carrying clean petroleum products to Florida.

Crowley is one of the largest independent operators of petroleum barges and tankers in the United States.
The company owns and operates a diverse fleet of double-hull tank vessels along with an unrivaled articulated
tug barge (ATB) fleet ranging in size from 155,000 bbl to 330,000 bbl capacity. Additionally, Crowley provides tanker
management services for other U.S. companies.

Delays up to 10 days reported for vessels awaiting transit at Panama Canal

Vessels using the Panama Canal are experiencing week-long delays, some even as long as 10 days,
according to shippers and container carriers.

While delays at the crucial trade artery of a day to a day and a half are common,
many carriers are warning shippers that unexplained lengthy waiting times have been
impacting global supply chains for the past three weeks. Cosco Container Lines,
in a recent note to clients, said some of its boxships were suffering
10-day delays in crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

The canal is in the closing stages of a huge expansion project to allow it to
accommodate supersized vessels with double the cargo capacities of the present maximum.

But it has encountered crack and leak problems with its new third lock,
which cast doubt on its ability to meet the deadline.
Despite that, ACP spokesmen and national politicians have insisted the expanded
lock function will be ready for its official opening in April 2016.

ACP is holding consortium contractor GUPC (Grupo Unidos por el Canal) responsible for the timely
and safe completion of the locks. GUPC is pledged to doing so by reinforcing the problematic
Pacific-end Cocoli locks as well as strengthening the Atlantic-facing Agua Clara locks as a precaution.

But both ACP and GUPC have insisted ongoing operations of the canal would not be affected.
GUPC comprises Spain’s Sacyr Vallehermoso, Italy’s Impregilo,
Belgium’s Jan De Nul and Panama’s Constructora Urbana, SA.

hoofd reden dat er lange wacht tijden zijn is droogte, de waterstand is te laag en met iedere schutten van sluizen raken ze meer water kwijt.

China’s HKND Group gets green light to start Nicaragua canal project in 2016

The company said it will first start preliminary work for Brito Port in the southwestern
coastal city of Brito at the end of this year.

“This is a milestone for the development of the project, and we are pleased that the project can now move
forward with full speed and with the support from many sectors of the country,”
said Bill Wild, the chief project adviser of HKND.

British consultancy firm ERM, which completed the the environmental and social impact assessment for the project
, said the project does have impacts, both environmentally and socially, but the positive benefits of
the project will exceed the negative ones.

According to Pang Kwok Wai, executive vice-president of HKND Group, the total cost of the project is
likely to be lower than the projected $50bn due to the decline in oil prices.
