Crane collapses at Sembcorp shipyard, damages newbuild jack-up Noble Lloyd Noble

Noble Corporation reported yesterday that its newbuild jackup rig, the Noble Lloyd Noble, sustained damage on February 28, 2016 following the collapse of a shipyard crane boom operating near the rig.

The rig is in the late stages of construction at the Sembcorp Marine Jurong shipyard in Singapore. Damage appears to be confined to one area of the rig, including damage to one of the rig's cranes.

The incident resulted in minor injuries to certain shipyard personnel.
The Singapore Ministry of Manpower has commenced an investigation into the cause of the incident and access to the rig is limited during the initial phase of the investigation.
Construction on the Noble Lloyd Noble was expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2016.
Following mobilization of the rig to the North Sea, the rig was expected to commence a four-year primary term contract with Statoil during the third quarter of 2016, with the contract stipulating a commencement date of no later than March 1, 2017. A thorough rig damage assessment is required before a revised schedule of delivery and contract commencement can be determined.

Europe’s Biggest Oil Hub Fills as Ship Queue at Seven-Year High

The queue of ships waiting outside Europe’s biggest port and oil-trading hub of Rotterdam has grown to the longest in seven years as a global supply glut fills storage capacity.

As many as 50 oil tankers, twice as many as normal, are waiting outside Rotterdam because storage sites are almost full, the port’s spokesman Tie Schellekens said by phone on Tuesday.

“This is a clear sign of the oversupply filling up storage to the brim,” Gerrit Zambo, an oil trader at Bayerische Landesbank in Munich, said by phone. “People are preferring to store oil rather than cut production. These are bearish signs.”
OT.jpg
OT.jpg (115.7 KiB) 3895 keer bekeken
The world is so awash with oil that BP Plc Chief Executive Officer Bob Dudley said last month people will be filling up their “swimming pools” with it this year. Traders are taking advantage of a market contango, where forward prices are higher than current prices, by buying oil cheap, storing it and selling the commodity later. As onshore storage fills up, companies could start stockpiling at sea in a repeat of a strategy last seen in 2008 and 2009.

Near Capacity
Crude oil in storage tanks in Rotterdam stood at 51.3 million barrels on Feb. 19, the highest for the time of year in data starting in 2013, according to Genscape, which monitors inventories. Royal Vopak NV, the world’s largest oil-storage company, last week reported a fourth-quarter occupancy rate of 96 percent at its 11 terminals in the Netherlands compared with 85 percent a year earlier.

The situation in Rotterdam mirrors that in the biggest U.S. storage hub of Cushing in Oklahoma, where stockpiles are at a record high.

“In Cushing and probably Rotterdam storage is filling up very quickly,” said Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS Group AG in Zurich, Switzerland. “In China, given high oil imports, there are too many ships and the infrastructure seems not be able to handle that.”

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, said last month it won’t cut production to ease global oversupply, while Iran has pledged to increase output after sanctions were lifted in January. Still, oil climbed on Tuesday from the highest close in more than seven weeks on speculation that monetary stimulus in China could help revive flagging economic growth in the world’s second-biggest fuel consumer.

Price Contradiction
Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose as much as 1.3 percent to $37.05 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange, after prices gained 6.3 percent last week.

There is a “contradiction” between the increase in oil prices and the physical supply and demand situation seen in Rotterdam and Cushing, Zambo said. With storage tanks filling up, oil prices for immediate delivery would probably fall while cargoes for future delivery would increase, resulting in a deepening of the market contango.

Chris Bake, a senior executive at Vitol Group, the world’s largest independent oil trader, said in February that traders are considering storing oil at sea, a strategy last employed in 2008 and 2009.

“Primary and secondary storage is pretty much full,” Bake said. “It’s probably a good time to be a vessel owner.”

Super-Contango
On Feb. 11, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in four months traded $6 a barrel higher than that for one-month supply, the widest gap in five years. The premium has since narrowed to $3.88 a barrel on Tuesday.

That’s still some way off the $15 premium reached in January 2009, a “super-contango” that helped traders make billions of dollars from storing oil in supertankers moored in sheltered anchorages in the North Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Singapore Strait and off South Africa.

Cutting-edge 14,000 TEU Containership Enters NYK Fleet

A new, advanced 14,000-TEU containership has entered the NYK fleet after being delivered at the Kure shipyard of Japan Marine United Corporation.

The vessel, NYK Blue Jay, employs a hull form that allows for improved cargo-loading efficiency, mainly achieved by minimizing engine-room space. Moreover, the vessel’s main engine is equipped with the world’s first system (patent pending) featuring two power ranges (high and low) that allow for high speed operations, and result in an improved fuel-consumption rate when slow-streaming, resulting in a significant reduction of both carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption.

These innovations will enable the vessel to achieve the greatest operational energy savings in the shipping industry, in addition to cost competitiveness that would favorably compare with larger vessels capable of carrying 20,000 TEUs.
NYK Blue Jay is the first of 10 containerships that will be chartered by NYK under time charter contracts with the owner. The other nine vessels will be delivered and chartered by June 2018.
NYK will put the first vessel into service between Asia and Europe, and continue the company’s efforts to provide higher quality and more competitive services for our customers.
About NYK Blue Jay:
Length Overall: 364 meters
Breadth: 51 meters
Molded Depth: 29.5 meters
Summer Load Draft: 15.79 meters
Deadweight Tonnage: 139,335 tons
Gross Tonnage: 144,285 tons

Historic call as Rickmers-Linie carries largest Siemens gas turbine to Turkey
A special loading operation has taken place in Bremerhaven, involving Rickmers-Linie’s MV RICKMERS HAMBURG, a 485-tonne Siemens gas turbine, a 465-tonne Siemens generator and German project freight forwarder Bertling.

Not only did the operation involve the transport of the largest gas turbine ever manufactured by Siemens, it also marked the first call of this class of Rickmers-Linie ship – a 30,000dwt multipurpose heavy lift vessel – in Bremerhaven, the place where the Rickmers Group was founded in 1834.

The Siemens gas turbine, which can generate up to 600 MW and has a weight of 485 tonnes, was safely loaded from a barge onto RICKMERS HAMBURG and was followed by a 465-tonne generator and accessories. The parts belong to a gas power plant project, in Hamitabat close to Lüleburgaz in the northwest of Turkey, which is scheduled to be completed by summer 2017.
The load is the first of four shipments and will be discharged in the port of Tekirdag, southwest of Istanbul. Rickmers-Linie’s specialized vessels will make three more calls at Bremerhaven to load cargo for this project.

Navitrans, agents for Rickmers-Linie in Turkey, secured the project for Rickmers-Linie in negotiations with Bertling Logistics in Istanbul, the nominated freight forwarder, which is coordinating logistics for this project. The office of Bertling Logistics in Bremen supported their Turkish colleagues with the pre-carriage arrangements in Germany as well as in local coordination and documentation.

Dirk Gindl, General Manager Sales Germany at Rickmers-Linie commented on the loading operation:
"Due to the weight of the cargo and the (for us) historic background of the location, this was not just like any other port call. Of course, no loading operation is ever exactly like another and it is never a routine. As always, thorough preparation, taking into consideration the value, size and weight of the cargo, was key to ensure a smooth and safe operation.”

Bremerhaven is the city where Rickmer Clasen Rickmers established his shipyard in 1834. Rickmers-Linie, a specialized liner operator for the worldwide carriage of break bulk, heavy lift and project cargoes, continues the Rickmers tradition, being one of the companies of Rickmers Group.

Turkish power ship to supply electricity to Zambia

Turkey's Karadeniz will in the next two weeks begin supplying Zambia with electricity from a power-generating ship as it looks to take advantage of chronic shortages in Africa, the company said on Wednesday.
Karadeniz builds what are effectively floating power stations which plug into electricity grids after berthing. They run on fuel oil but can also use natural gas.

Image: Karadeniz
One of the firm's vessels docked this week at Mozambique's Nacala port, from where it will supply 100 megawatts of electricity for the next two years, power that will then be exported through the grid to neighbouring Zambia.
This is the second power ship Karadeniz has deployed to Africa after a 225 MW unit arrived in Ghana last year.

"Africa has a clear increasing demand for electricity and presents itself as a very good market for us," business development director Zeynep Harezi told Reuters.
Harezi said several other African countries had expressed an interest in using Karadeniz powerships, which can be delivered in 120 days.
The 48 countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, with a combined population of 800 million, produce roughly the same amount of power as Spain, a country of just 46 million. This constrains Africa's growth and keeps hundreds of millions in poverty.
Given Africa's huge electricity deficit, power ships can only offer a small, short-term boost to power output.

GAIL Delays LNG Carrier tender again

India’s GAIL has again postponed the tender seeking to hire nine LNG carriers to carry U.S. liquefied natural gas starting in 2017.
According to the tender documents GAIL has set the new date for bid submissions to March 31, 2016.
lng.jpg
lng.jpg (74.92 KiB) 3505 keer bekeken
Indian company re-floated its tender in September 2015, but has since delayed the bid submissions date twice. It was last expected to close on February 29.
No changes were made to the initial tender as GAIL is still looking for nine LNG ships of a cargo capacity of 150,000-180,000 cbm, enabling it to comply with its off-take commitments at Sabine Pass and Cove Point LNG projects from December 2017.

According to the report by Press Trust of India, GAIL’s chairman and managing director B C Tripathi noted the latest postponement is due to a request by bidders that are looking for more time to complete their bids.
Under the original tender, nine vessels, three of which have to be built by shipyards in India, will have a delivery window from January 1, 2019, to May 31, 2019, for foreign shipyards and July 1, 2022, and ending June 30, 2023, for Indian shipyards.

Indian shipyards, Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering and Cochin Shipyard have already agreed deals with South Korea’s DSME and Samsung Heavy Industries, respectively, to cooperate in the construction of the vessels.
Cochin Shipyard has additionally acquired a licence by France’s GTT to build LNG carriers with the Mark III membrane containment system.
