Evangelos Chatzis, CFO of Danaos Corp., a Greek company that owns 56 container ships, said 2015 will be stable, but that next year, “on the back of the slow year in ordering in 2014, we will not have as many ships in the water so demand will outpace supply in 2016.”

Chatzis said Danaos is buying new ships with capacities of ships of 18,000-20,000 20-foot container units, but only with contracts sfor long-term charters in place. “You cannot go wrong acquiring ships at historically low prices.” He said it was ordering medium-sized ships in the 16,0000-TEU range with shorter-term charters in place.

UASC celebrates the world’s greenest vessel with financing partners

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) hosted an event in Hamburg last week to celebrate one of the world’s
most environmentally friendly ultra-large container vessels M.V. Al Muraykh, delivered in August 2015,
with its banking partners. The event was held to acknowledge UASC’s financing partners who have collectively
contributed to backing UASC’s newbuilding program, comprising eleven 15,000teu vessels and six 18,800teu vessels.

Members of UASC’s Board of Directors and Executive Management, as well as more than 60 representatives from
leading banks and financial institutions from around the world participated in the day-long event that included a
guided tour on-board the 18,800teu M.V. Al Muraykh, while on its maiden voyage in North Europe.

Speaking at the event, Basil Al-Zaid, Chief Financial Officer of UASC, said:
“In a capital intensive industry like container shipping, it is critical to invest in the most efficient assets to keep
pace with market growth and maintain competitive unit costs. With our trusted partners, UASC has achieved a
series of milestones including our current newbuilding program, considered one of the industry’s largest and
most technologically advanced”.

“In recent years, efficiency has become an increasingly important differentiator in achieving a solid financial performance,
whether it stems from improving vessel design through our newbuilding program, strategic partnerships – such as Ocean 3 and
our cooperation agreement with Hamburg Süd - or empowering our people, efficiency pervades every facet of our strategy.”

“We take this opportunity to convey our appreciation to our financing partners for the trust they have shown in us,
as they continue to contribute to our success in providing eco-efficient shipping solutions to customers worldwide”, Al Zaid concluded.

Capital secured over the past seven years has been used to finance UASC’s two latest newbuilding orders in 2008 and 2013,
as well as the Container box financing and working capital requirements. This reflects UASC’s strong ties with its trusted
partners as well as its commitment to being a pioneer in the industry.

Al Muraykh pays maiden call to Apm Terminals Zeebrugge

The technologically advanced LNG-ready containership (18 mila teu) is the latest new Ultra-Large Container Ship
addition to the global fleet calling Apm Terminals Zeebrugge.
The second of United Arab Shipping Company’s six ordered 18,800 TEU capacity Ultra-Large Container Ships,
the LNG-ready Al Muraykh, called APM Terminals Zeebrugge on its maiden voyage to Europe on the AEC1 (Asia/Europe Container Service 1) route.

These vessels utilize new advanced technology to reduce CO2 emissions per TEU by 60%, compared with 13,500 TEU capacity vessels
delivered just three years ago, and are the largest vessels to be able to operate powered by either liquefied natural gas (LNG)
or conventional heavy fuel oil.
The vessels are the first to have received DNV GL certification of compliance with the latest LNG regulations.

United Arab Shipping Company is setting a new world standard in environmental performance for liner services,
as well as fleet growth, and we are very proud to be a part of this historic process” said APM Terminals Zeebrugge Managing Director Carla Debart.

Currently the world’s 15th-largest shipping line, with a fleet of 56 vessels representing an overall capacity of 482,617 TEUs,
UASC has embarked on an ambitious program of expansion which includes pending deliveries of 4 x 18,800 and 6 x 15,000 TEU-sized vessels,
which will add approximately another 170,000 TEUs, increasing its fleet capacity by 35%.

APM Terminals Zeebrugge, which is one of a select group of European container terminals which can accommodate ULCS
with containers stacked 10-high on deck and rows 24 containers-wide, handled 406,000 TEUs in 2014, in North Europe’s 7th-busiest container port.

As of September 1st, there were 31 vessels of 18,000 TEU capacity or above in service in the global container fleet, with 72 more awaiting delivery.

MSC Mediterranean takes new delivery.

On Thursday (Oct 22), MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company took delivery of the MSC Silvia,
the latest of a brand new class of 9,400 TEU container ships from the leading ocean carrier.

Following the inauguration ceremony in Shanghai, MSC Silvia will join the Empire service between the Far East and US East Coast ports.
msc.jpg
msc.jpg (101.87 KiB) 1357 keer bekeken
Built at the Hudong shipyard, in China, the new ship sails under the Panama flag.

As a family-owned group with a strong culture of maritime traditions, MSC’s new container vessels usually bear the names of
relatives of MSC Group founder and Executive Chairman, Gianluigi Aponte, or those of the wives, mothers or daughters of MSC employees.

This latest container ship, which follows the deliveries of four 19,224-TEU Oscar class ships already this year,
demonstrates MSC’s unstinting commitment to customer service. And it is further evidence of the MSC Group’s increased focus on China,
following the September announcement by MSC Cruises of a new strategic partnership with China’s leading outbound tourism service provider,
CAISSA Touristic.

Under the partnership, MSC Lirica will homeport in Shanghai from May 2016,
marking the first ever deployment of an MSC Cruises ship in Chinese waters.

MSC Cruises, already Europe’s number one cruise line, has been present in mainland China since 2010,
working in partnership with the Shanghai International Port Group to bring Chinese cruise travellers to Europe.
But this latest advancement signals an assertive new push into the booming Chinese cruise market and the further
expansion of MSC Cruises’ growing global footprint.

CSCL plans bareboat charter of up to eleven 21,000 teu containerships.

China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) has announced a move to bareboat charter up to 11 units of 21,000 teu
ultra-large containerships via its wholly-owned subsidiary.
cscl.jpg
cscl.jpg (77.98 KiB) 1139 keer bekeken
The plan is to bareboat charter six of the mega-sized ships with options for five more similar vessels,
the Chinese shipowner announced to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

CSCL will decide on whether to build or purchase the five options after six months of the charter agreement on the six vessels.
The shipbuilder and the owner for the 11 vessels were not disclosed.

CSCL said the deal will allow the company to “uphold its low carbon emission operations,
follow the market trend of operating larger containerships, further optimise its fleet structure,
and raise competitiveness.”

Meanwhile, CSCL has been hit by a third quarter loss of RMB1.05bn ($165.2m)
as against a profit of RMB 203.25m in the same period of last year, as operating profit plunged.
Revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2015 was recorded at RMB7.86 bn, a decline of 14.6% year-on-year.

The shares trading of CSCL on the Hong Kong and Shanghai bourses remained suspended
since 10 August pending a major announcement that may involve asset reorganisation.

China Shipping Group (CSG), parent of CSCL is rumoured to be planning a merger with
China Cosco, resulting in the shares trading suspension on the listed units of both the state-owned shipping conglomerates.

CSCL Wants to Charter Up to 11 21,000-TEU Giants

China Shipping Container Lines Company Limited (CSCL) revealed its plan to bareboat charter up to
eleven 21,000 TEU containerships via its wholly-owned subsidiary as it pushes to boost its
competitiveness and lower its carbon footprint.

Six mega boxships will be rented out on a firm charter, with options for five more units,
as disclosed in a Shanghai stock exchange filing. Details on the owner of the six
containerships and/or potential builder of the additional five ships have not been revealed.
cs.jpg
cs.jpg (44.35 KiB) 966 keer bekeken
Image: CSCL
CSCL reported a decrease in net profit by 250.31% during the third quarter of 2015 as compared with
the corresponding period of last year. The net loss reached CNZY 1.05bn against a profit of CNY 203,2bn in
the corresponding period last year. The company said that the plunge was mainly due to the decrease in
operating profit of the company during the reporting period coupled with depressed market condition.

The decline in earnings builds upon a reported 97.5 % fall in earnings in the first half of the year.
In relation to the suspension of company’s shares from Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges
since August 9, CSCL said that the trading will continue to be suspended as certain material matters
are still being contemplated by the controlling shareholder of the company, the China Shipping Group.
The said contemplation is believed to be connected to a reported merger between China Shipping and COSCO.

“As advised by China Shipping, the relevant matters are still under robust contemplation at this stage. However,
due to the complicated nature of such matters, which may involve asset reorganisation,
they are currently still in the process of further research and analysis,
including discussion with each intermediary about the details of the transaction and communication with
regulatory authorities in respect of the relevant matters, among others,” CSCL said.

It is expected that the trading suspension will not last more than one month since 16 October 2015.
The merger of two container shipping majors, China Cosco and CSCL, is believed to stem from China’s
efforts to consolidate state owned enterprises; a move which is likely to cause a domino effect on
existing carrier alliances and further carrier mergers in Asia, damaging industry competition,
according to consultancy firm Drewry.
