Swire Bulk, a bulk division of Singapore-based The China Navigation Company, has taken delivery of its new, log-fitted bulk carrier.
The 44,150 cbm Singan is traded worldwide with a strong focus on the logs trade in the Pacific and South Atlantic. The vessel was named at the Hakodate Dock’s shipyard in Hakodate, Japan. The Handy bulker embarked on its maiden voyage at the end of April for Busan.
Specifically, the newbuild is designed for optimal speed and consumption at 12.5 knots in the laden condition. The eco-efficiency additions of the rudder bulb, wake fin and pre-swirl will improve vessel hull efficiency.
MV Singan is the first ship delivered in a wider orderbook of ten bulk vessels to be built in Japan. The remaining vessels are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2021.
MV Sungkiang, MV Singan’s sister vessel, is being built at the same shipyard scheduled for delivery in June 2020.
Singan is the third vessel in a series of eighteen ships built to transport soya bean, bean oil and beancake between Chinese ports.

Ships in Quarantine as Brazil Struggles With COVID-19
Porto-Cabedelo.jpg

The shipping industry continues to find itself caught in Brazil’s struggles with the COVID-19 virus. The ports, which are vital to Brazil’s economy, are being challenged to manage operations with several ships being quarantined as the country’s health officials attempt to stop the spread of the virus.
Brazil was the first of the South American countries to report cases of the virus in February and continues to have the highest number of cases in the region. According to the World Health Organization, Brazil recently became the country with the second-highest number of confirmed cases of the virus – nearly 400,000 as of May 26 – and it is currently reporting the world’s highest number of daily deaths from the virus.
Experts have cautioned with its densely populated urban slums and rampant poverty, Brazil is both highly vulnerable to virus and likely to remain a hot spot for some time to come. Indeed, the World Health Organization cautioned of regional spread of the virus across Latin America saying that Brazil and the Americas are developing as the new global hot spot for the pandemic. WHO forecasted that the infections and deaths would continue throughout the region during the next several months.
While health officials are struggling with COVID-19, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has ignored advice to take more significant steps toward containment and mitigation. Bolsonaro has spoken against measures such as lockdowns, quarantines, and social distancing saying that this would only weaken Brazil’s economy.
The shipping lines are finding themselves caught in Brazil’s struggle to come to grips with the disease and to enact meaningful controls. In recent weeks, several ships were detained for quarantine of their crews in Santos, the region’s largest container port, and now reports are surfacing of similar problems spreading to other ports in Brazil.
The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) is overseeing all the efforts, monitoring the movements of ships and crews requiring reporting of all health issues. They have been overseeing COVID-19 testing and the implementation of quarantines.

Stena Bulk’s product tanker the Stena Premium, one of the company’s smaller P-max tankers (total carrying capacity of approximately 67,000 tons) is the latest vessel to be reported quarantined in Brazil. When the ship arrived at the port of Cabedelo on April 24, it was reporting crew with symptoms and later six crew members tested positive for the virus. One of the crew members was later taken to a local private hospital while the vessel was placed in a 14-day quarantine.
While the initial quarantine was completed, two additional crew members later tested positive which resulted in an extension of the quarantine order. Despite protests from the ship’s captain, the Stena Premium remains in port.
At Santos, however, the situation has improved for some of the ships that have been placed in quarantine. The MSC Giselle, a 9400 TEU container ship, had been held pending tests on its crew but the ship was permitted to depart continuing on its route to South Africa. Similarly, the MSC Cruises ship the MSC Seaview has completed its quarantine so that MSC can begin crew repatriation.
The 5300 TEU container ship Barbara, however, remains in quarantine in the Santos anchorage after reporting cases of the virus among its crew. Additional, the Brazilian container ship Log In Jatoba is also in quarantine with the majority of its crew reportedly testing positive for the disease.
The shipping industry is likely to continue to experience challenges in Brazil as the country continues to struggle to contain the virus.

WinGD wins type approval for biggest and most powerful ever dual-fuel engines

WinGD (Winterthur Gas & Diesel) has received type approval for the biggest and most powerful LNG-fuelled engines ever built. Class society Bureau Veritas awarded the approval for WinGD’s dual-fuelled 12X92DF engines, the first series of which is currently being built by China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) and will power nine ultra-large container ships (ULCS) owned by the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics. These vessels will become the largest container ships powered by liquefied natural gas and represent a significant step on the path to the energy transition of the shipping industry.

The type approval was awarded following a series of extensive full-load tests in diesel and gas operation. A virtual ceremony on May 26 with guests joining from Beijing, Shanghai, Marseille, Paris and Winterthur marked the landmark moment for the ground-breaking engine technology, which has brought the use of LNG as a marine fuel into an entirely new vessel sector.

In a statement, CMA CGM said: “The certification ceremony marks a new stage in the construction of the CMA CGM’s nine 23,000-TEU LNG-powered vessels. These vessels are the world’s largest containerships powered by LNG. CMA CGM’s ground-breaking choice in favour of LNG is a major step forward and a clear illustration of our resolute commitment to environmental protection and to the energy transition of the maritime industry. This certification is a major milestone as it marks the recognition of the technological efficiency of our dual-fuel engine project.”

Olivier Cartier, Technical Vice President, Bureau Veritas, commented on the approval: “The certification process of WinGD’s 12X92DF engine was a long process due to the size and complexity of the engine. We mobilized our worldwide teams of engine specialists, especially in China, in France and in Germany, at each of the critical phases of the certification process. Progressive Type Approval Tests were necessary where at each test significant progress and refinement were noted, so that we remained confident that final certification at 100% of the power using gas as fuel was an achievable objective – and this has now been achieved.”.

“With the type approval of our biggest engines to date, we are opening up the possibilities of LNG-fuelled ship propulsion to yet another vessel segment, a testament to its cost-efficiency, reliability and sustainability,” said Klaus Heim, WinGD CEO. “This is an important step towards the sustainable energy transition within the shipping industry and we are incredibly proud of the role WinGD plays in this journey.”

“WinGD’s X92DF engines offer the most sustainable emissions footprint currently available, outperforming expectations for NOx, SOx and PM emissions and with CO2 levels over 20% lower than typical diesel engines. With it’s unique combination of Otto (lean burn) and Diesel cycle technology these engines can adapt for any of the potential sustainable fuels of the future making them a secure asset for a long time to come.” added Dominik Schneiter, Vice President, for Research and Development at WinGD.

The development of the X92DF engine builds on the expertise and experience gained from more than 500,000 operating hours for WinGD’s market-leading X-DF dual-fuel engine technology. That landmark comes just under four years since the first engine went into service, highlighting the rapid uptake and remarkable reliability of WinGD’s low-pressure concept.

WinGD has received 320 orders for their X-DF engines including 60 in operation. The X-DF has been the best-selling dual-fuel low-speed engine technology in the maritime market since the second half of 2017. As well as the first gas-fuelled ULCSs, WinGD’s low-pressure X-DF technology also powers the first LNG-fuelled Aframax shuttle tankers with VOC recovery and very large crude oil carriers.
