Boluda Towage acquires Dutch Towage & Salvage Company Iskes

Vicente Boluda Ceballos, Boluda Towage SL, and Jim Iskes has today signed in Amsterdam an agreement with the Dutch family-owned Towage & Salvage company, to acquire their port towage activities in Eemshaven (the Netherlands), Lubeck (Germany) and Lisbon (Portugal) as well as its offshore activities, plus and with the management and office staff in the head office in IJmuiden, the Netherlands.

The purchase of Iskes strengthens Boluda’s position as leading operator providing towage and sustainable marine solutions in Europe, with new presences in the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal.

Iskes will remain a separate entity directly under Boluda’s headquarters in Valencia, Spain, and as such will continue to manage the aforementioned harbour towage activities.

Presence of Boluda Towage in the Baltic sea
It has also been agreed that Iskes will focus on strengthening and further expanding the offshore activities of Boluda in North West Europe, with a close watch on the Baltic market, Kiel Channel and Poland.

After the official closing of the transaction, the local management team of Iskes Towage & Salvage will be headed by Ronald Vergouwen as Managing Director. Former owner Jim Iskes will stay on board as strategic advisor.

Commenting on the sale, Iskes owner Jim Iskes, stated: “We are very happy to join the Boluda Group because it is also a family-owned company, with short direct lines and a similar spirit. We could not be more pleased with this combined organisation and asset portfolio. Although we find ourselves in exceptionally challenging times at this very moment, we are committed to consolidate Boluda’s future prospects, to continue strengthening Boluda’s position as European tugboat market leader, and to open up new opportunities with our innovative attitude.”

Vicente Boluda Fos, Chairman at Boluda Corporación Marítima commented: “We have been long friends of Iskes and we value their entrepreneurial spirit and pioneering vision. This is why we are very pleased that they wanted to become part of our Group.”

Vicente Boluda Ceballos, Executive vice president of Boluda Towage, added: “We have recently experienced the benefits of the synergies resulting from this partnership. For example, the Iskes tug GINGER has assisted our London port operation in recent weeks. Having exciting times ahead of us we certainly intend to deploy Iskes’s professional crews and experienced employees on future projects.”

MSC Picks Up Costs to Avoid General Average After Maersk Elba Fire

Portuguese maritime police arrive to assist Maersk Elba (Autoridade Marítima Nacional)

BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE 01-19-2021 06:41:00

In a circular to customers issued Monday, number-two container carrier MSC said that it would be picking up unspecified costs in order to avoid a declaration of general average for its customers with cargo aboard Maersk Elba, operated by 2M Alliance partner and number-one container carrier Maersk.

Maersk Elba sustained an engine room fire off Portugal on December 26, and the damage was serious enough that it left her without propulsion. Maersk chartered two tugs to come to her assistance, and they towed her into port at Algeciras, Spain for repairs, arriving December 31. No injuries were reported.

Temporary repairs are nearly complete, and the Maersk Elba will set sail on Wednesday for Wilhelmshaven, Germany, where she will be offloaded. Maersk intends to arrange for feeder vessel transfer to carry onward-bound cargo from Wilhelmshaven to the ports of Felixstowe and Rotterdam.

"The Maersk Elba was carrying cargo for MSC customers as part of our Shogun service," MSC said. "Exceptionally, on this specific occasion, MSC has taken the decision to cover the costs so that the vessel operator [Maersk] will not declare general average. This decision was taken to avoid additional costs or delays for our customers as a result of this incident."

MSC did not disclose the cost or extent of the damage, nor whether any cargo was damaged in the incident. Maersk Elba was carrying a full load at the time of the casualty.

Declaration of general average would typically require cargo interests to post a GA bond prior to the release of each box. Depending upon the scope of the loss, a declaration of general average can impose significant costs on shippers.

Maersk Essen Diverted to Mexico Due to California Container Port Congestion

Yesterday, we posted about the Maersk Essen that recently lost 750 containers over the side in a storm in the North Pacific. An unknown number of containers still aboard the ship are believed to have been damaged during the storm. The ship was originally scheduled to dock in Los Angeles but has now been diverted to Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, where it is expected to spend some time alongside taking off damaged boxes on deck. The ship will also be surveyed for storm damage.

The ship was diverted due to extraordinary container port congestion in Southern California. The Port of Los Angeles, the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere, is absolutely jammed with container ships. Recently, there were over 30 container ships at anchor in San Pedro Bay off Los Angeles and Long Beach waiting for berths. Container loading and discharge operations, designed for the fast turn-around of the ships in port, have slowed dramatically.

The ports have been doubly hit by the pandemic. There has been an unexpected rise in trade with China. The New York Times reports that the surge in imports is another byproduct of the coronavirus, with Americans channeling money they might have spent on vacations, movies, and restaurant dining to household items like new lighting for home offices, workout equipment for basement gyms, and toys to keep their children entertained.

As trade volume has risen, rampant Covid-19 infection rates in California threaten to deplete the number of dockers available to work. LA port director Gene Seroka estimates that up to 1,800 dockers may already be on coronavirus-related sick leave, according to Maritime Executive.

“Los Angeles health officials are sympathetic to the concerns… and also acknowledge the essential nature of the work performed by the port employees to maintain commerce across the region, but their hands are largely tied. Like many parts of the country, Los Angeles is facing a shortage of the vaccine calling on the federal government to increase distribution to the hard-hit areas.”

The pandemic has also hit the availability of truck drivers, rail and warehouse workers.

Container ship operator Hapag Lloyd is estimating that the port congestion will last until the end of February 2021.

Updates from from Maersk Line
Maersk Essen 051N impacted by heavy weather
26 January 2021

22 January 2021
Latest Update
In yesterday's advisory, we communicated that the Maersk Essen is proceeding to Lazaro Cardenas to assess the condition of the vessel and cargo onboard, and we expect this process to take a matter of 2-3 weeks. All going well, the intention remains for the Maersk Essen to then call Los Angeles to deliver the cargo that is unaffected. At this point in time we are not anticipating the need to reroute the cargo from Lazaro Cardenas by land (rail) or alternate vessel, but we cannot rule out any option until the contingency plan is finalized.
What you can expect?
With regards to potentially damaged containers, we have conducted a preliminary assessment onboard and you will be receiving a separate communication with the initial status of your containers by Monday Jan 25, if not already. We will however re-evaluate the condition of the containers onboard once a more detailed inspection is completed in Lazaro Cardenas and will send you additional updates.
Your supply chain is of the utmost concern to us and we will continue to keep you informed of all developments. In addition, our customer experience representatives will continue to keep you updated directly.

Latest Update
We wanted to let you know that our Crisis Management Team is directing the Maersk Essen to call the port of APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico (on the Pacific coast). Subject to vessel clearance and other formalities, the expected berthing date is January 29, 2021. APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas is a modern, deep-water port that serves Mexico City.
Considerations
Our decision was based on the need to remove damaged containers and conduct vessel repairs onboard which will entail a lengthy port stay. We explored all alternative port call options on the US West Coast from Tacoma to Los Angeles/Long Beach – and none were deemed feasible due to berth availability.
We realize this is not the original port call at APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles scheduled for January 28th – and apologize for the inconvenience and disruption to your supply chain.
What you can expect?
Once the vessel berths in Lazaro Cardenas, we will be able to get better access to the affected areas and survey the condition of the containers onboard. As this information becomes available, we will re-evaluate routing options for the cargo and the vessel’s onward schedule. It is therefore not known yet when the vessel and cargo will arrive in Los Angeles, but we expect a delay of 2-3 weeks compared to the original transport plan.

20 January 2021
To keep you informed, the TP6 Maersk Essen’s rough sea encounter has resulted in approximately 750 containers overboard - along with additional damaged containers onboard. More details will be known as surveys continue and once the ship arrives in port.
The ship is sailing in smooth seas now while we evaluate the best port of call to handle the discharge of the cargo and the repair work on the ship. Since the Saturday, January 16th incident, our Crisis Management Team has met daily to evaluate the next steps.
Our customer experience representatives will be contacting you to provide more details on the cargo affected and the next destination of the vessel, as more information becomes available.

18 January 2021
We regret to inform you that the TP6 vessel - Maersk Essen 051N - experienced heavy weather on the 16th January 2021, while en route from Xiamen, China, to Los Angeles, California.
Our preliminary reports indicate that a limited number of containers have been lost overboard and a number of containers are damaged onboard. All crew members have been reported to be safe and the ship is safe.
We are currently assessing suitable port options to berth the vessel and will keep you informed of the port location decision and timing. In the meantime, we are awaiting further updates from the vessel regarding potentially impacted containers and will share the details once available.
We apologize for the inconvenience this incident may cause to your business. In case of any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your local Maersk professional.

AP Moller-Maersk moves to block video showing Maersk Essen cargo damage
Claims consultancy WK Webster took down footage clearly showing damage caused by loss of 750 containers in Pacific

Marine claims consultancy WK Webster has removed drone footage showing extensive cargo damage to an AP Moller-Maersk boxship from its website at the request of the Danish shipping giant.
WK Webster posted the video of the 13,092-teu Maersk Essen (built 2010) showing its condition after it arrived at anchorage at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas on Wednesday.
As earlier reported by TradeWinds, the vessel lost about 750 containers after running into a storm in the Pacific and was diverted to the Mexican port from Los Angeles.
WK Webster’s video, which appeared briefly before being removed, clearly showed extensive cargo damage to the Maersk Essen.
The nature of the damage, with numerous collapsed container stacks, appears similar to that suffered by the Ocean Network Express-operated, 14,052-teu boxship ONE Apus (built 2019) after it was also hit by a Pacific storm in a similar accident two months earlier.
The scale of the damage of the Maersk Essen is much smaller than in the case of the ONE Apus.
Removal request
But in response to a request from Maersk the footage was removed from the website last night.
WK Webster said: “We regret to advise that we have removed our copyright footage of the Maersk Essen following a request from Maersk.”
Maersk said it had requested the video be removed because WK Webster was using it to advertise its services. A spokesperson told TradeWinds: "It is correct the footage was gracefully removed upon our request. We asked the surveyor in question to remove since it was using this drone footage of our trademark in direct advertising of its own offering. We are not as such active in asking removal of footage across media outlets, social media."
The consultancy's drone footage of containership damage has been used to help cargo interests and their insurers to understand the cargo damage suffered in such boxship casualties.
Such footage recently revealed the cargo damage suffered by the ONE Apus was much more severe than had been initially thought.

Maersk was initially slow to release information on the Maersk Essen incident to the press. The ship ran into trouble on 16 January, and Maersk did not issue a press statement until 21 January, after the liner giant was contacted by TradeWinds.
However, Maersk said it did notify clients shortly after the incident and put a public posting on the news and advisories section of its website.(Copyright)
