D'r zit wat mij betreft geen woord of toespeling op de politiek in Jan !.
Feit is wel dat al half jaren 80 nauwelijks of geen stage plaatsen te vinden waren voor leerlingen die van de Hogere Zeevaartschool af kwamen. Het overgrote deel is dan ook nooit gaan varen maar heeft, ( noodgedwongen ), een job aan de wal moeten gaan zoeken. Als het inderdaad zo is, dat Jan de Hollander, of Tukker of Limburger, enz., niet meer op zee nodig zijn, kunnen al die zeevaartscholen ook hun deuren wel sluiten.
Er is zelfs een Nederlandse rederij die haar officieren op de Filipijnen opleid...……….
Kortom, ook geen plaats meer voor een Groningse, Drentse, Utrechtse of Zeeuwse scheepsofficier, om maar enkele zuiver willekeurige provincie bewoners te noemen. :idea: :roll:

Gisteren een binnenscheepvaartbeurs bezocht in Gorinchem. Als zoon van een oud binnenvaartkapitein
wilde ik toch wel eens zien wat daar zoal aangeboden werd.
Het is altijd interessant om de technische/nautische ontwikkelingen bij de binnenvaart te volgen.
Mijn vader voer o.a. als afloskapitein ook op tankers van pakweg 1500 ton, voor die tijd echt grote schepen.
(Damco, later Nedlloyd geworden). Bemanning : kapitein, stuurman, matroos en matroos/motordrijver.
Heden ten dage varen er schepen die twee keer zo groot zijn, bemannining : kapitein , stuurman/matroos ,
het liefste nog dat de echtgenote van de kapitein deze functie bekleedt,stukken goedkoper.
Op de beurs stonden ook een paar uitzendorganisaties , in de aanbieding : Fylipino matrozen , 95,00 per dag.
Zo zie je, de teloorgang van de scheepvaart beperkt zich niet alleen tot de zeevaart. Ook daar telt:
Hoe goedkoper, hoe beter voor de aandeelhouders.
Ben blij dat ik als oud-massinissie van de koopvaardij betere tijden heb meegemaakt.

Werd me zojuist door m'n neeffie opgestuurd via Wotsèp… Geen idee hoe aktueel het is, maar voor mij is het nieuw
Je schijnt dus ook niet meer met een dozenbootje (of zo) op de deurbel te mogen drukken....

Het Braziliaanse container schip PEDRO ALVARES CABRAL van de Aliança Navegação e Logistica
onderweg van Pecem (CE) naar Manaus (AM), redde woensdag (23/5) 's avonds de Franse zeezeiler
Michael Luc (60).
Deze was de 17/5 van Cabedelo (PB) vertrokken met bestemming de Caribbean via de Braziliaanse kust.
Tussen de deelstaten Ceara en Para kwam hij met zijn zeil jacht ROXANE in moeilijkheden en moest het
jacht - later gezonken - achterlaten. Na 2-1/2 dag in een rubbervlot te hebben rondgedreven werd
een noodoproep op de VHF door het containerschip ontvangen.
Er werd gelijk een reddingsoperatie op touw gezet door de de bemanning. Korte tijd later was er al visueel
contact. De Fransman werd aan boord genomen zonder noemenswaardige verwondingen.
En de reis naar Manaus werd vervolgd.
De Fransman heeft een lange ervaring in het oceaan zeilen.
Over wat er precies gebeurd is, werden geen verdere mededelingen gedaan.

ULSTEIN Introduces The X-BOW® In ‘Compact Concept’ RoPax Designs

Ulstein has developed a range of X-BOW® vessels for the RoPax market. The portfolio is based on Ulstein ‘compact concept’. This concept increases the competitiveness of such vessel designs by higher revenue making at lower financial and operational costs.

The X-BOW® is one of Ulstein’s contributions to cleaner and more sustainable shipping operations. Introducing the X-BOW on RoPax vessels is a natural design development.

Environmental footprint
Many RoPax vessels operate in harsh areas, for which the X-BOW was originally designed. An X-BOW vessel at the same speed and weather conditions will use less power than a conventional bow vessel. The X-BOW hull line is a proven solution used in a number of different market segments, and leads to improved seakeeping, and reduced speed loss and fuel consumption, hence a reduced environmental footprint.

Safety and comfort

The seakeeping behavior of RoPax vessels is important to the integrity of the cargo and the comfort of the passengers. In many cases, the movements of a vessel call for a slow-down. This may in turn challenge the regular scheduling of a vessel. However, the X-BOW RoPax vessels will not need to slow down even in fairly rough weather, which help to keep schedules. This has been proven in offshore vessels, where more than 90 vessels are already in operation.

Flexibility and efficiency
The ‘compact’ concept of shorter, wider and slower design solutions, leading to high capacity vessels and less expensive newbuilds.The concept introduces higher flexibility with respect to vehicle logistics on board the vessels, a flexibility which is much appreciated by customers of the RoPax industry.
The propulsion system of the vessel can be designed according to the vessel’s operational profile and set schedule. A smaller propulsion plant will contribute to lower capital investments (CAPEX), less maintenance (OPEX) and reduced energy consumption (VOYEX), making the operation of the vessel more efficient.

Further, and equally important, power energy consumption improve the greener profile of the vessel and its operations.
The ULSTEIN ZED solution can also be used on RoPax vessels to achieve zero emissions for longer periods of time when at port or in environmentally sensitive waters

“RoPax is a segment in growth, where we will see fleet renewals in the years to come. We have for some time worked to integrate Ulstein’s design mindset into a range of RoPax vessels. These vessels are all equipped with the X-BOW hull feature, a natural choice when operating in climatically rough conditions,” says COO Design & Solutions, Tore Ulstein.

“Our RoPax vessel designs are optimized according to market needs and will be constructed in series for the volume market,” states Tore Ulstein. One potential country for the ship construction is China.

“We have had offices and site teams in Shanghai and Ningbo for many years, and our people have long experience in system integration and site follow-up,” says Tore Ulstein. He continues:

“More than half of the more than 100 Ulstein designs which have been built outside Norway, have been constructed in China with Ulstein site teams present. We have good relations to our Chinese partner yards and are currently in dialogue with several yards on the construction of these RoPax vessels.”

An approach which combines the best of two cultures
Design of volume series has been carried out successfully in Ulstein several times, last seen with a series of up to ten expedition cruise vessels of which all will be built in China. With Norwegians and Chinese working side by side in our China-based companies, we can offer an understanding of both cultures which helps to smooth the language barriers and cultural challenges found in all walks of international business life.

The RoPax range have been developed for volume construction. For clients who request a higher degree of customisation, Ulstein has their own prototype yard, Ulstein Verft, in Norway.

HHI receives approval for VLCC 'eco-tanker' design

LR presented AiP to HHI in a ceremony at Nor-Shipping 2019, taking place this week in Oslo, Norway
LR has presented HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd) with approval in principle (AiP) for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) ‘eco-tanker’ design, capable of using a combination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) mixed with LNG as fuel and Norsepower’s rotor sail solution for wind-assisted propulsion. This development was the result of a joint development project (JDP) collaboration between HHI, LR and Norsepower.

The VOC recovery system was developed by HHI and will allow the VLCC to use fuel produced from naturally-occurring vapor from the cargo tank during operation. The AiP has been verified for interface and control logic stability with other systems, resulting in reduced emissions and stably improved efficiency.

The impact of the installation of Norsepower’s rotor sail solution, such as structural reinforcement and visibility calculation, was reviewed using computational-fluid dynamics (CFD) during the JDP and it was confirmed that it has the potential of providing 5-7% fuel savings, dependent on operating routes.

LR facilitated a high-level hazard and operability (HAZOP) workshop for the LNG fuel supply system and associated technology in accordance with LR’s ShipRight Procedure for Risk-Based Designs. The concept design has been examined in conjunction with the result of the HAZOP.

This AiP demonstrates the potential for reducing emissions in ship designs, by combining VOC recovery and LNG in a dual-fuel system with the addition of rotor sails, to help the shipping industry address the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

Hong-Ryeul Ryu, Vice President in the Initial design office of HHI, said: “We have focused on developing clean and smart ships that are technically reliable and commercially feasible. We are doing our best to design advanced ships that will benefit ship owners and lead eco-friendly shipping. We believe that these efforts will bring us a step closer to the future.”

Jukka Kuuskoski, CSO of Norsepower, said: “We are excited to be collaborating with HHI and Lloyd’s Register on this project. We are optimistic that support from these industry leading organisations will open up the market for our rotor sail technology to a larger number of VLCCs – propelling towards a modern era of auxiliary wind propulsion for the global maritime industry, while supporting shipping’s transition to decarbonisation and achieving greater ship fuel efficiencies. Wind is one of the most freely available energy sources making wind-assisted propulsion viable in supporting the shipping industry to reduce its fuel consumption and meet impending carbon reduction targets.”

Nick Brown, LR's Marine & Offshore Director, presenting the AiP certificate, commented: “Lloyd’s Register is proud to award this AIP to HHI, with collaboration from Norsepower. LR has a unique expertise in the LNG field and alternative fuels, which is widely recognised by the market. This LNG-fuelled VLCC is a clear step towards meeting the IMO’s 2050 GHG goal.”
