Piraterij

Bericht door Joke »

Ik maak me geen zorgen maar dit is toch fijn om te lezen terwijl je man in Straat Malakka verblijft. 8)

Armed piracy increasing in Aceh

Indonesian policemen guard Melahayati habour in Indonesia's province of Aceh. Piracy attacks in the area have previously been attributed to members of the GAM separatist movement of Aceh

London, 24 June 2004 -- A sudden increase in gun-toting pirates attacking ships in the northern Malacca Straits has resulted in eight serious incidents being reported within a 12-day period from 4 June 2004.

Groups of pirates armed with automatic machine guns and grenades are targeting ships in the region, with most boardings taking place within a 100 mile radius of Kuala Langsar off the coast of Aceh, Indonesia. The attacks have consisted mainly of kidnappings of senior crew members, often the master and chief engineer, followed by a ransom demand for their release.

Previous attacks in the area have been attributed to members of the GAM separatist movement of Aceh.

Captain Pottengal Mukundan, director of the ICC International Maritime Bureau, said: "This concentration of attacks against vessels in a small area suggests that it may be the work of a few gangs of criminals. Recently, the Indonesian Navy has had some very successful operations, notably the recovery of the hijacked Indonesian tanker Pematang. We are encouraged by this success. We are calling upon the Indonesian Navy to take appropriate action in these waters to ensure that the current gang of criminals are bought to justice without delay."

On 6 June, pirates armed with guns and using eight small boats fired upon a Singaporean tug towing a barge at 1800 LT in position 05:03N - 098:45E, in the Northern Malacca straits. They ordered the tug to stop under threat of continuing gunfire. When the tug shut down its engines, seven armed pirates boarded and kidnapped the master and chief engineer, threatening to execute them unless the chief officer agreed not to alert the authorities for five days.
The pirates also stole cash, personal belongings of the crew and the ship's documents.

In another incident, on 8 June, approximately 20 pirates, believed to be Aceh rebels, boarded an Indonesian bulk carrier and forced 12 crew members to jump overboard. The master and chief engineer were kidnapped, and the pirates demanded a ransom from the ship owners. Fortunately, the crew who had abandoned ship were pulled from the water by nearby fishing vessels.

The IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre has sent a special warning to vessels operating in this region. The IMB has also expressed concern to the Indonesian authorities about the growing level of violence and sudden spate of kidnappings. Although there has been no official response from the authorities, Reuters news service reported that Indonesia's Naval Chief has ordered his commanders to shoot on sight pirates and armed terrorists operating in key waterways, including the Straits of Malacca. The Straits of Malacca is an extremely busy waterway, carrying a third of world trade. According to Reuters, Navy Chief of Staff Bernard Kent Sondakh, is set to meet with his counterparts from Malaysia and Singapore to pursue ways of increasing joint patrols in the Straits.

The IMB's Tri-annual Conference on Piracy and Maritime Security will take place in Kuala Lumpur on 29 and 30 June 2004. The 165 invited delegates represent law enforcement, developers of government maritime policy, and commercial shipping interests from 34 countries. The conference, held in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police, will look at the current status of piracy, armed attacks, maritime security and the difficulties and solutions in responding to this specific type of crime.

Hey hallo allemaal,

Tja piraterij...

groetjes ruud
