The port is naturally protected; there is no swell. The chief exports come from the fishing industry: fish meal, frozen and tinned fish, fish oil, some general cargo and cotton. The imports consist of general cargo (including containers) cereals, fertilizers and vegetable oil in bulk.
Pilotage is compulsory and the pilot boards 550 m off the pier head, in 7 _ fathoms.
Ships with dangerous cargo should anchor _ of a mile off the pier head, bow seawards, and not to the shore, as it is usually done.
The port. The depth in the manoeuvring basin is 33', but the maximum safe draught is 30'. The mean tidal range is 3.8', and 4.9' in springs.
There is a finger pier, which is 365 m long and 36 m wide, with 4 berths. The first, Nº 1A, is 165 m; on the west side the depth is 30' alongside and Nº 1B on the east is 32'. On the remaining 200 m, nearer the shore, the west berth, Nº2C has 20' and the east, Nº2D, 20'. The pier is 4,20 m above the sea level.
Ships operate with their own gear, and the port has platform cars and tractors. There are 5 sheds (5,224 square metres) and an open storage paved yard (16,000 square metres).
Bulk grain is unloaded by 2 suction tubes on a mobile hoop to trucks, at a rate of 20 tons per hour approximately. The storage silo- with a capacity of 9,000 tons - is outside the port area.
Containers can be handled by a forklift of 20 tons and a mobile crane of 12 tons.
Deep frozen fish is loaded from a floating deposit or tucked direct form the two freezing plants ashore.
About 250 metres north easterly from the pier head there is a connection to a 6" pipeline for pumping semi refined oil to 2 tanks on shore- which have a capacity of 1,200 and 800 tons respectively- at an unloading rate of 70 tons/hour.
The same berth can be fitted with ramps to unload cattle on the hoof.
Port dues and charges are on the Enapu tariff (q.v.)
Tugs. There are 2 tugs of 850 and 360 hp and a launch of 50' hp.
Bunkers are not available.
Stevedoring. Five gangs of stevedores are available.
The cost of Loading and Unloading is about U$S 10 per ton on average. The loading rates are: bags fish meal 15 tons; bales cotton 20 tons; frozen fish 13 tons; whale meal cartons 28 tons per gang/hour; for unloading the rates are: reels paper, bags fertilizers, steel and lumber, 20 tons; machinery 9 tons; miscellaneous general 7 tons per gang/hour.
Water is usually available, but there are periods of shortage. The pier has 10 hydrants and delivers at a rate of 20 tons an hour with a maximum of 200 m tons per ship.
Stores. A limited supply of provisions is available.
Repairs. Only minor floating repairs can be done.
Hospital. A medical center is available.
Communications. There is a bus service to ........., which is 50 km away
Weather. It is constantly hot; there is no rain, or fog. Storms are very exceptional.
