Three VROON platform-supply vessels to be recycled

Vroon Offshore Services (VOS) has decided to dispose of three platform-supply vessels (PSV), with the aim of “right-sizing” its PSV fleet. The vessels, VOS Power, VOS Producer and VOS Prominence, were built between 2006 and 2007 and joined the Vroon fleet on delivery from the shipyard. Over the years, they have engaged in platform-supply operations for a large number of Oil & Gas operators in the North Sea.

All three vessels had been laid-up for some time in the North of The Netherlands. Although kept well maintained and in excellent technical condition throughout this period, the recent downturn in offshore Oil & Gas markets and continuing negative employment outlook resulted in a recent decision to divest the units.

The vessels will be repositioned from Harlingen to a specialised Dutch ship-recycling facility during the second half of this month. Here they will be dismantled in full compliance with both EU/national laws and all applicable international regulations and guidelines. Components and materials will be recovered in a safe and environmentally sound manner for re-processing and re-use to the largest extent possible.

VOS will continue to operate an extensive fleet of modern offshore-support vessels, including 17 PSVs, from offices in Aberdeen, Den Helder, Genoa and Singapore.

Ulstein - Zero-emission turbine installation is today’s reality

Ulstein's second hydrogen hybrid design for the offshore wind industry, the ULSTEIN J102 zero emission wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), can operate 75% of the time in zero emission mode. Using readily available technology, the additional cost is limited to less than 5% of the total CAPEX.
ul 1.jpg
ul 1.jpg (61.29 KiB) 1356 keer bekeken
Most new jack-up designs are featuring a battery hybrid system in addition to diesel gen sets, with a future option for hydrogen powered fuel cell system. The downside however of a high-power battery energy storage system (BESS) is its heavy weight and cost. That is not beneficial for a WTIV design, where weight savings are essential for minimizing Elevated Weight and optimising the Variable Deck Load.

Taking the industry from hydrogen prepared to hydrogen powered

Rather than to opt for technology to be matured to perfection and make a design that is prepared for future hydrogen powered fuel cells, Ulstein has taken the pragmatical, yet realistic approach. ‘We have carefully analysed the operational cycle of WTIVs and looked at the power demand in the various modes of operations’, says Ko Stroo, Product Manager at Ulstein. ‘This analysis showed that ca. 75% of its time, a WTIV is in jacked-up position performing crane operations. Using a combination of a hydrogen fuel cell system and a relatively small battery energy storage system (BESS) is then sufficient to meet the overall power demand on board and crane peak loads.’

Attractive business case for turbine installation vessels

‘The same design philosophy as on our first hydrogen powered SX190 design, resulted in a much more attractive business case when applied to a turbine installation vessel’, states Edwin van Leeuwen, managing director of Ulstein’s Rotterdam design office.

The hydrogen hybrid system of the ULSTEIN J102 design has been developed in such a way, that future developments in hydrogen technology can easily be fitted into the vessel without major modifications. ‘The limited availability of hydrogen bunker infrastructure in ports is often seen as a major hurdle. With our modular storage lay-out, we want to break the chicken and egg dilemma’, continues Stroo. ‘It creates flexibility to operate the vessel worldwide, even when bunker infrastructure is not yet present.’

‘The strong focus on renewable energy and emission reduction to meet worldwide climate goals should also be reflected by investments in cleaner operations when installing offshore wind turbines’, says Edwin van Leeuwen. ‘Hydrogen is one of the most promising zero-emission fuels for offshore vessels and we want to be leading in developing sustainable ships.’

Main features of ULSTEIN’s J102 hydrogen-hybrid zero-emission design are:
CO2 reduction per year: 4,000 mt
Emission reduction per installation cycle: 25 %
H2 fuel cell system: PEM fuel cell
H2 storage system: 7 x 40ft containers compressed H2
Battery energy storage

Heerema’s Sleipnir installs 4,850 metric ton Tolmount Platform

The world's largest and most sustainable SSCV Sleipnir has safely installed the Tolmount platform In the Southern North Sea. The project consisted of installing the 2,350 metric ton jacket and 2,500 metric ton topside constructed by Rosetti Marino.
sl 1.jpg
sl 1.jpg (63.7 KiB) 1146 keer bekeken
Sleipnir traveled to the Tolmount Field located 40 km off the coast of Hull, UK, with a water depth of around 51 meters on October 7. Installation began on October 12 when the jacket was safely lifted from the Heerema barge H-408. After finalizing jacket and pile installation, Sleipnir lifted and installed the 2,500 metric ton topside on October 13, over five hours, to complete the Tolmount Platform project.

The Tolmount jacket and topside arrived at the Tolmount field following a 5,390 km journey from Rosetti's yard in Ravenna, Italy. The Tolmount Platform will be a Normally Unattended Installation (NUI), located in the vicinity of the 42/28d-13 appraisal well and will handle wet gas production from four platform wells. The Premier Oil operated Tolmount field development is on track to deliver first gas in the second quarter of 2021 and will be an important energy supplier for the UK.

sl 2.jpg (89.66 KiB) 1146 keer bekeken
Rosetti Marino managed the construction and installation of the low-carbon design jacket and topside on behalf of client Premier Oil. The project involved more than 1,100,000 manhours, was executed LTI free, and was completed over a duration of 26 months.

"The close collaboration with Rosetti Marino has been a highlight of the Tolmount project. Despite challenges introduced by the ongoing pandemic, we worked together to find creative solutions, which were handled with total professionalism and high regard for safety," said Michel Hendriks, Heerema Transport and Installation Director.

Sleipnir has a wide range of sustainability measures, including dual-fuel functionality allowing the vessel to run on LNG, a cleaner fuel than standard MGO. During the Tolmount installation, the vessel ran on LNG, reducing carbon emissions and Heerema's impact on the planet. This action is in line with Heerema's announcement that the company will go Carbon Neutral in 2020.

Despite summer coming to a close, Heerema's Sleipnir continues to be busy in the North Sea, and with another successful and safe installation completed, the vessel moves on to the next project in an active summer campaign.

ooss.jpg (155.78 KiB) 1021 keer bekeken
The width of the towing and the difficulty of the operation set a new record in the history of navigation on the Yangtze River. The entire Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River will implement downstream ship traffic control.

At 1040 on October 9, under the strict maintenance of the Nantong Maritime Safety Administration’s sea cruiser and 6 high-horsepower tugboats, the world’s most advanced semi-submersible heavy crane life platform “OOS Serooskerke” slowly left China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. outfitted the dock, completed the formation and started the towing journey out of the river. It is reported that the total length of the platform is 137.75 meters, the molded width is 81.0 meters, the molded depth is 12.0 meters, and the maximum height above the water is 96.3 meters. The total length of the towing vessel formation is 399 meters and the width is 101 meters. A homework activity for.

The “OOS Serooskerke” platform is manufactured by China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. It adopts a left-right asymmetrical pontoon and column design. It is equipped with 6 single 3800KW propellers. The combined hoisting capacity of the crane is 4400 tons, which can be 750 at the same time. People provide comfortable and safe living and working conditions. The variable load of storm self-existing conditions can reach 6,300 tons, and it can work under severe conditions. It is equipped with DP3 closed-loop dynamic positioning system. It has oil and gas production, installation modules, underwater services, and dismantling. Platform, service support and other functions. Compared with the previous world’s largest semi-submersible heavy-lifting life platform “Pioneer Spirit”, this platform has the same functions but more advanced technology and information technology and more competitive construction costs.

The total length of the ship formation for this towing operation is 399 meters, the width is 101 meters, and the draft is 10.5 meters. The width of the towing and the difficulty of the operation both refresh the previous records of the navigation history of the Yangtze River. Therefore, the operation activities require extremely objective conditions such as hydrology, meteorology, and navigation environment. high. The average daily flow of ships in the waters of the ship formation is more than 2500. The flow of ships is large and the navigation environment is complicated. The towing formation exists during the period of departure, formation, crossing anchorage, crossing the main channel, port navigation, docking and mooring. Greater security risk.
In order to ensure the safety of towing on the “OOS Serooskerke” platform, under the unified coordination and command of Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration, Nantong Maritime Safety Administration meticulously formulated a traffic organization and maintenance plan, issued large-scale towing permits, issued navigation notices, and organized relevant port and shipping companies to adjust The voyage production plan, as far as possible, “gave way” for the platform towing out of the river. During the platform unberthing and towing period, the maritime departments of Nantong, Changshu, and Taicang strengthened the overall linkage, implemented temporary traffic control on the navigable waters in advance, and dispatched 7 marine patrol boats to escort the whole process. The maritime departments of the entire Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River will organize the implementation of downstream ship traffic control, stagger the towing nodes of the fleet in advance, and ensure the safety of navigation during the towing period of the “OOS Serooskerke” platform.

The “OOS Serooskerke” platform will temporarily dock at the Taicang Port Container Terminal at 1600 o’clock on October 9th , and leave the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River in the early morning of the 10th, heading for the Shanghai Lvhuashan anchorage.
