Tradewind Voyages’ Golden Horizon sailed from Dover on July 16, as planned, after a discrepancy regarding payment of the vessel led the courts to intervene
Jul 19, 2021

On July 15, UK authorities acting on behalf of Star Clippers and the Admiralty Marshall arrested the Golden Horizon at Dover port.
The five-masted vessel was originally commissioned by Star Clippers at Brodosplit shipyard and was completed in 2019 but then became the subject of a legal dispute.
Last June, DIV Group parent of Brodosplit said in a release it would be keeping the ship, to be named Golden Horizon and operated by Tradewind Voyages UK.
On July 16, Star Clippers revealed it did receive, ‘a first payment from Brodosplit towards its outstanding debt’ and therefore Star Clippers instructed the immediate release of the vessel, while advising the shipyard ‘to pay the remaining financial obligations due without further undue delay to avoid further enforcement action...’

Tradewind Voyages Golden Horizon Sails From Dover After Brief Delay
Tradewind Voyages Golden Horizon has finally embarked on her maiden voyage, after a brief delay. As she set sail on a four-day voyage from Dover, UK, the ship was forced to turn around due to a financial dispute between the original owner, Star Clippers, and the Brodosplit shipyard in Croatia at which she was built. After a delay of almost 24 hours, the ship was allowed to sail.
The 272 passenger five-masted barque, setting 68,000 square feet of sail, or over twice the sail area of the clipper ship Cutty Sark, is the largest square-rigged sailing ship in the world.

World’s Largest Wooden Sailing Ship to Sail on Historical Route Using Biofuels
3 Sep 2021,
In a world where all eyes are on the technology of the future, a Swedish company has looked into the past and brought back to life a piece of history, by recreating the replica of an 18th century wooden sailing ship, from scratch. Now, that ship is becoming an ambassador for a sustainable maritime industry.
SOIC Ship Management succeeded in building an 18th-century ship in full 1:1 scale, by using the materials, manufacturing techniques and tools that were available at that time. Gotheborg of Sweden II, fully operational, became the largest sailing wooden ship today. It took many years for the design to be developed without the help of any original drawings, but the ship eventually came to life in 2005.

The company’s next ambitious goal is for Gotheborg II to sail on the same path its predecessor did, following the old trading route from Sweden to China. The journey is set to begin in April 2022 and end in Shanghai, by October the same year. In preparation for that historical sailing trip, the ship has arrived in Stockholm at the end of August, where it will remain until September 4.

Although this majestic vessel is a tribute to the 18th century wooden version, it still has to take into consideration modern times requirements. By using just its sails, Gotheborg would not be able to reach its destination in the short 7-month period, which is why it’s equipped with engines.

However, during this recent trip to Sweden, Gotheborg used biodiesel made from rapeseed oil, instead of conventional marine diesel, in two of its four fuel tanks. This is the first step in SOIC Ship Management’s commitment to minimizing the ship’s environmental impact. During the trial of the RME biofuel, for safety reasons, conventional fuel was also used in the other two fuel tanks.

It might look like a small step, but it’s a big deal for the maritime industry, where the transition to sustainable fuels is still painfully slow. The plan is for Gotheborg to use alternative fuels during its upcoming Asian expedition. With the wooden sailing ship being already quite popular, this would help spread the message across the industry and maybe help accelerate the transition to sustainable ships.
When sailing to Stockholm, and back to Gothenburg, the ship Götheborg uses RME biodiesel, made from rapeseed oil, instead of marine diesel in two of its four fuel tanks. The initiative is part of a bigger sustainability commitment to minimise the ship’s environmental impact and promote solutions for a more sustainable world.
Leaving Stockholm tomorrow!
03 September 2021
Tomorrow, Saturday, 4 September, at 2pm (14:00) the ship Götheborg will leave Stockholm. We want to thank Stockholm, all of you that have come to look at the ship from shore, and all our guests that have been on board for a wonderful ten days.
The interest shown in the ship has been amazing, and it is a great start to our journey sailing to Asia in April 2022. It will be a seven-month adventure, where the ship will not only serve as a great platform for our partners, but also for Sweden as a whole.

Route sailing out of Stockholm
The route out of the archipelago will go through Oxdjupet, Lindalssundet and across Kanholmsfjärden to Sandhamn.
We will set sail after Sandhamn.

Why we don’t set sails in the archipelago
We get a lot of questions about why we don’t set sail in the archipelago. The reason is that Götheborg is a big ship. She is the biggest ocean-going wooden ship in the world, and built for sailing the oceans, which means the margins in the archipelago are too small. Setting the sails takes a lot of time, which in the archipelago would mean that we’d have to start taking a sail down before even getting it up. To give some reference, setting all sails takes at least a day, and the same amount of time is needed to take them down.

The engines help us sail more
We are required to have engines, and we don’t use them out of laziness or convenience, but because we have to. The engines mean that we actually sail more. They help us to quickly get out to the ocean, where the ship really comes to her right. In the past, the ship had to wait for the wind to blow in the right direction, and thus to turn each time the route required a change of direction. This meant it could take weeks to just get out of the archipelago.

Bijzonder interressant schip.
