Shipping developers eye up route through melting Arctic
While the rate of ice loss in the Arctic has alarmed environmentalists this summer, it has left maritime developers rubbing their hands with glee, as the prospect of a commercially viable Northern Sea Route looks increasingly likely.
Arctic Ocean here we come! China became the latest country to navigate the Northern Sea Route last week when its vessel Snow Dragon arrived in Iceland. Linking the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, the Northern Sea Route allows ships to cut down on travel time from Asia to Europe by edging through the icy waters between north Russia and the North Pole. China’s adventure shows its growing interest in the route. But they’re not the only ones whose appetites have been whet by the thawing of the Arctic: many in the Northern Hemisphere would welcome a commercial course that could rival the current route. Until now, ships have been forced to pass by Indonesia, India, the Gulf and finally through the crowded Suez Canal – which saw almost 18,000 vessels chug through last year alone – before reaching the Mediterranean.
Following a northern course instead – west above Canada or east above Russia – cuts the journey time by half, as pointed out by Chairman of Norway-based Tschudi Shipping, Felix H. Tschudi, in an interview with Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun published on Tuesday: "If a cargo ship with a maximum load capacity of 40,000 tons can pass through the Northern Sea Route, that will shorten the journey by 22 days and cost $839,000 [670,000 euros] less than going through the Suez Canal." The article also notes that 1,000 tonnes less fuel is needed for the northern journey. Also known as the Northeast Passage, the Northern Sea Route has only recently become accessible to large vessels due to the melting of the Arctic. Germany was the first Western power to make the journey in 2009, and was soon followed by Japan, Denmark, Canada and the UK.
In 2011, a total of 37 vessels made the trip. But this year saw record levels of thaw, allowing China’s icebreaker an easy passage, with the crew reporting an “astonishing” lack of ice as they skirted the North Pole.
“The Polar ice cap is currently smaller than it’s ever been,” explains Valérie Masson-Delmotte, a palaeoclimatologist and global warming specialist from the Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory outside Paris. The US-based National Snow and Ice Data Centre registered record levels of ice loss in mid-August, when the Arctic mass shrivelled to 5.09 million square kilometres, or half of the 1979 to 2000 average for the same date. Today, it barely meets the size of the European Union.
And it’s not over yet. Masson-Delmotte says that the ice usually stops melting at the end of September, meaning the Arctic mass will get smaller yet before it begins to grow again in autumn. That’s good news for shipping giants, who benefit from the Northern Sea Route’s ever-longer summer accessibility. Today it’s navigable for around two months; a decade ago the passage was open for just a few weeks at the height of summer. Nonetheless, the Northern Sea Route and the Northwest Passage are far from becoming rivals to the Suez Canal, says Masson-Delmotte. “There’s certainly a new channel opening up,” she admits. “But it will be a few decades yet before we get to a point [when they’re busy commercial shipping routes].”
Wildly varying year-on-year conditions in the Arctic Ocean are far from an attractive prospect for shipping companies who need to schedule crossings during a short-lived period and in a region which is frozen over for the best part of the year. While 2012 was exceptionally mild, 2013 could make the Northern Sea Route a far less hospitable passage for seafarers.
That’s not to mention the infrastructure needed to accommodate an increased flow of traffic. There are currently very few ports along the route, which would pose as a problem in the case of an accident, and subsequently make the cost of insurance substantial. Each commercial vessel would be obligated to travel with a naval escort, costing around 400,000 dollars per crossing, says Liu Miaojia, a navigation expert at Bimco. But the true cost of the venture could be the environment. European environmental group Bellona describes the Arctic as "a more sensitive environment than regular places,” which would be better left alone. “We should abstain from developing the Arctic,” project coordinator Igor Kudrik told Asahi Shimbun. Environmentalists also argue that pollution from the vessels will accelerate the melting of the Polar ice cap, pushing sea levels even higher even faster. They also warn that an oil spill in the region would be far more complex to manage due to the special formation of ice masses. Source : France 24

RS and Vyborg Shipyard sign a classification agreement for innovative icebreakers
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has signed a contract with Vyborg Shipyard (VSZ) on classification of new generation icebreakers of Project 21900M that will be built at the shipyard, the RS press release said. The vessels will be classed to: KM ✪ Icebreaker6 [2] AUT1-ICS FF2 BWM EPP ECO HELIDECK Special Purpose Ship and will sail under the Russian flag. The 21900M project icebreaker, a double-decked vessel of unlimited navigation area, has a helipad and is equipped with twin controllable-pitch screws, twin rudders and bow thruster. Ship’s general characteristics: gross tonnage - 11,649 tons, DWT – 5340, length overall – 119.8 m, breadth - 27.5 m, draft – 12.4m. The icebreaker will be able to cut channels through ice of up to 1.5 meters in thickness. The ships will be utilized for escort of large-tonnage cargo vessels, towing, fire fighting on floating structures and other facilities, for salvage of stricken ships and transportation of cargo. The two newbuilds are scheduled for delivery in May and October 2015. The 21900M project vessels will be operating in the Baltic. The Russian classification society will perform technical monitoring of the icebreakers construction pursuant to the RS regulations and international conventions, including the examination of hull, of machinery, electrical and automation equipment. RS also will take part in dock-side and sea trials. Upon successful completion of all these examinations and trials the society will hand out classification certificates and a package of convention documents.
The Project 21900M icebreakers will be built in the framework of the Federal Target Program "Development of Transport System of Russia (2010-2015)". The icebreakers construction is expected to be completed in October 2015 and will be handed over to Rosmorport. Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) created in 1913 has become a leading classification society. PS activity is aimed at ensuring the safety of navigation, safety of life at sea, prevention of pollution from ships. RS is recognized by the European Union and is a member of IACS, an associate member of INTERTANKO and BIMCO INTERCARGO. PS has performed classification and technical verification of the icebreakers and ice sailing vessels for almost 100 years.
Vyborg Shipyard (OJSC Vyborg Shipbuilding Plant) is a largest shipbuilding firm in Russia’s North-West region specializing in building drilling rigs for offshore deposits development and vessels of small and medium tonnage. Source : PortNews

ABB wins $35 million order for next generation icebreaker in Russia’s Arctic
Integrated propulsion and electrical systems to maximize performance and energy efficiency of icebreaker expected to operate in 2 meters of ice at minus 35 degrees Celsius.

Zurich, Switzerland, October 1, 2012 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently won an order worth $35 million from the Baltic Shipyard Ltd. to supply powerful propulsion and energy efficient electrical systems for a new icebreaker vessel under construction for Russia’s state shipping company Rosmorport FSUE. The order was booked in the third quarter of 2012. The 25 megawatt (MW) line diesel-electric icebreaker is the next-generation multifunctional dieselelectric icebreaker. The navigation area of the icebreaker is the Northern Sea Route, the Arctic seas and estuaries of rivers discharging into the Arctic Ocean. The icebreaker is able to proceed continuously both ahead and astern at the speed of 2 knots in compact ice field up to 2m thick with 20 cm of snow cover and temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius. Considerable gains in energy efficiency can be achieved using an Azipod® propulsion system, with up to 20 percent fuel reduction. The delivery schedule is due to start in 2013 and the vessel will be delivered to Rosmorport in 2015. “The extreme conditions north of the Arctic Circle demand constant availability and high-energy efficiency from all systems on board,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “ABB’s solutions will ensure the reliability and maneuverability required for this type of ship’s operation. This agreement represents a very significant milestone for us, underlining our excellent reputation in the Russian market as a long-term, reliable partner and reinforcing our global leadership in supplying propulsion for icebreaking vessels. ABB will provide integrated power generation and distribution systems, thruster motors, fire-fighting pump motors as well as 25 MW propulsion systems. The propulsion system of the vessel features two Azipod® thruster units (power output 2 x 7,5 MW) and one centerline arranged shafting with a fixed pitch propeller generating additional 10MW output. All Azipod® propulsion units for this project are specifically designed for extreme Arctic ice class RMRS Icebreaker-8.
