Pioneering Spirit removes Valhall QP topsides.

3800 t topsides lift is the lightest yet by Pioneering Spirit
Successful lift demonstrates the vessel’s versatility
QP platform removal is the first job for Allseas under the frame agreement with Aker BP
Pioneering Spirit has safely removed the QP accommodation platform topsides and connecting bridge from the Aker BP-operated Valhall field in the southern Norwegian North Sea. Weighing only 3800 t, the QP topsides is the lightest that Allseas’ record-breaking vessel has lifted to date.

The successful lift further demonstrated the workability and versatility of the world’s largest construction vessel.
Executed in the morning of Friday 14 June, the single-lift operation took 2 hours to complete from positioning Pioneering Spirit around the platform to the moment of the lift. The actual “fast lift” of the topsides took only 9 seconds.

The 109 t bridge connecting the QP topsides to the neighbouring drilling platform was removed using one of the vessel’s cranes on Tuesday 11 June.

Removal of the QP topsides is the first job for Pioneering Spirit under the frame agreement which Allseas signed with Aker BP in 2017 to provide transport, installation and removal services for the Valhall oil field. The Valhall complex is located approximately 280 km off the Norwegian coast and comprises six steel, bridge-connected platforms that stand in 70 m of water. The QP topsides is the first of the original structures to be removed from the field centre as a key part of the modernising of the Valhall area.

Today’s lift successfully concludes two years of engineering, planning and pre-lift preparations, which ended last month with the installation of lift rigging for the bridge and cutting of the platform legs. The castellated cut shape, combined with pre-installed custom made leg restraints, prevented any possible topsides movement prior to the lift.

The QP topsides and bridge have since been sea-fastened on board Pioneering Spirit for transport to the Kvaerner AS disposal yard in Norway. The topsides will be transferred to a cargo barge at a sheltered location close to the yard for load-in to the quay for dismantling. The bridge, meanwhile, will be crane-lifted directly onto the quayside.

Pioneering Spirit will return to the North Sea to remove the 24,800 t Brent Bravo topsides for Shell UK.

Shell’s Brent Bravo topside arrives at UK port to be scrapped

Once again we have demonstrated that we are a world leader in the marine decommissioning industry which is set to grow rapidly in the years ahead"

That was how Peter Stephenson, founder and Executive Chairman of Able UK, described the successful arrival at Able Seaton Port of the giant 25,000 tonnes Brent Bravo oil rig platform in preparation for its dismantling and recycling.

The Brent Bravo, which stands 410ft tall and 230ft wide, is the second platform from the Shell Brent field to be decommissioned at Able Seaton Port—the first, the Brent Delta, arrived in May 2017. Both were transported from north-east of Shetland by the Allseas Pioneering Spirit, one of the largest vessels ever built.

After arriving off the North East coast, the Brent Bravo was transferred to a 200-metre long barge, the Iron Lady, for the final part of the journey to Able Seaton Port where it is currently moored on Quay 6. Next week the final manoeuvre will see the platform ‘skidded’ on to the multi-million-pound demolition pad which forms part of what is probably the strongest quay in Europe.

Able invested £28million in constructing this new facility, including one of the strongest quays in Europe, to meet the requirements for handling the Brent platforms—and putting the company at the forefront of the growing demand for decommissioning platforms as they come to the end of their operational lives.

During 2020 Able Seaton Port will welcome a number of other new large-scale projects including the next element of the Shell project – the Brent Alpha – as well a series of platforms and structures from the ExxonMobil operated Sable Offshore Energy Project (SOEP) off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Heerema's Sleipnir Passes Sea Trials with Flying Colors

Sleipnir, Heerema Marine Contractor’s newest state-of-the-art semi-submersible crane vessel and the world's first LNG powered Construction Vessel, has successfully completed her sea trials and crane load tests.

sl H.jpg (48.78 KiB) 9615 keer bekeken
During Sleipnir’s sea trials all major systems performed according to specifications or even better:

Sleipnir’s speed was tested and when fully deploying all eight thrusters, a speed was reached of 12.2 knots, approximately 22.6 km per hour, significantly reducing Sleipnir’s transit time to projects around the world.

The vessel’s two 10,000-tonne revolving cranes which can lift loads of up to 20,000 tonnes in tandem, were also put to the test. Being the largest crane vessel in the world, Sleipnir can lift huge loads and the tests showed she can easily meet the cranes’ specifications. Operational tests were carried out successfully with loads of 11,000 tonnes per crane (110% of its capacity) and the cranes passed the tests with flying colors.

The Dynamic Positioning system performed even better than the specifications and the system can keep Sleipnir stationary within the footprint of a garden tile of 30 x 30 cm during operational work.

Sleipnir will soon commence its maiden voyage to southern Spain where it will be prepared for its first installation project in the Mediterranean.
