Jan De Nul and LS Cable will connect offshore wind farms Hollandse Kust Noord and West Alpha to the Dutch power grid

TenneT has awarded the consortium Jan De Nul Group and LS Cable & System the contracts for the supply and installation of high voltage cables for the grid connection of the Dutch offshore wind farms Hollandse Kust Noord and West Alpha.

Jan De Nul Group will take care of the transportation, laying and protection of the cables that will be designed and manufactured by LS Cable & System. Offshore execution will take place in 2022-23.

The Hollandse Kust Noord and Hollandse Kust West Alpha export cable systems will consist of two 220kV AC cable systems each. These four cable systems will cover a total length of 210 km, connecting the wind farms to the onshore Dutch power grid near Beverwijk, just north of the port of IJmuiden. When operational, these wind farms will generate up to 1,400 MW, enough green electricity to meet the annual needs of one million households.

Dick Lagerweij, Project Director HKN/HKWa TenneT Offshore: “Since Q3 2018 TenneT has prepared the project documents for offshore cable installation. Five bidders were qualified to submit their proposals and early 2020 we concluded that the consortium was best placed to win this contract. We are aiming for completion of the project as a whole by 2023, and the offshore cable installation including beach works and termination to the platforms is a vital part of the project. We are much looking forward to a positive cooperation.”

Philippe Hutse, Offshore Director at Jan De Nul Group: “We are proud to have been selected by TenneT to take on this project together with our partner LS Cable & System. Our versatile offshore installation vessels are ideally suited to bring this project to a successful conclusion. Thanks to its very large carrying capacity, our Cable Lay Vessel Isaac Newton will load the cables in Korea and transport them to the Netherlands for installation with a minimum number of offshore joints. Our Multi-Purpose Support Vessel Adhémar de Saint-Venant will execute the post-lay trenching works and the rock protection works at the subsea crossing locations.”

SBM achieves sailaway of final modules for Johan Castberg Turret Mooring System

In line with its client’s plan, SBM Offshore announces the sailaway of the last two modules for the Turret Mooring System, destined for Singapore for integration into the hull of Equinor’s Johan Castberg FPSO. This milestone represents the successful completion of the modules fabrication phase.

“We are delighted to have completed this milestone for the Johan Castberg project. It represents a great achievement thanks to the quality work performed by the project teams across the world, the close engagement with our client and the dedication and expertise of the yard and our vendors,’’ said Michael Sandberg, SBM Offshore Senior Project Manager.

Drydocks World Dubai (DDW) fabricated all four modules for the Turret Mooring System (TMS). The first two modules, the Bogie Support Structure and the Lower Turret, were completed in 2019 and delivered to the Singapore yard in 2019/2020. The Manifold and Gantry modules were completed and safely loaded onto the transportation vessel in mid-April, and delivery to the Singapore yard is planned for in May.

Turret Mooring System

The turret design is an 8,000 tons Bogie Turret accommodating 21 riser slots for Equinor’s new build FPSO Johan Castberg for the Skrugard, Havis and Drivis discoveries in the harsh operating conditions of the Barents Sea, offshore Northern Norway. The FPSO will be permanently moored in 372-meter water depth by means of three bundles of five mooring lines.

The TMS allows the FPSO to safely stay in position on the field in the extreme weather conditions, while ensuring safe operations and the transfer of fluids from the seabed via the risers to the FPSO. This project brings SBM Offshore into new territory offshore Norway, adding to its portfolio of large and complex turret mooring systems for harsh environments, cementing its leading market position.

Van Oord installs world’s first submerged Slip Joint successfully

On 25 April, the Slip Joint foundation was successfully installed at the Borssele Wind Farm Site V. It is the first time anywhere that a submerged Slip Joint was used on a full-sized offshore wind turbine on a fully commercial basis.

After years of developing the system in cooperation with its technology partners, Van Oord deployed offshore installation vessel Aeolus to install the Slip Joint foundation this week. The design and production of the Slip Joint was certified by DNVGL in the autumn of 2019, with MottMcDonald assessing it on bankability aspects. The Borssele Site V project consists of two 9.5 MW wind turbines and Van Oord has been awarded the Balance of Plant scope for this project.
Slip Joint foundation
The Slip Joint is an alternative connection between foundation elements, a monopile and a transition piece. It consists of two conical sections placed on top of each other. The Slip Joint is based on friction, with the weight ensuring firmness and stability. Installation takes place by sliding the wind turbine’s foundation elements over the monopile, without having to use grout or bolts. Unlike standard solutions, the Slip Joint makes a submerged connection possible, allowing for a more balanced weight distribution between monopile and transition piece. It therefore opens up the possibility of manufacturing larger foundations for the next generation of wind turbines with existing manufacturing facilities and installing them at deep-sea locations using existing vessels. The (conical) sections that make the connection are produced using standard manufacturing methods. The Slip Joint provides a rapid, simple and safe installation solution in combination with reduced maintenance for the duration of the project.

The innovations at Borssele Site V: ingenuity in execution

The Borssele Wind Farm Site V is a new sustainable energy zone some 20 kilometres off the Dutch coast, which is designated as an innovation site within the Borssele Wind Farm Zone. Two Towers BV, consisting of Van Oord, Investri Offshore and Green Giraffe, has been awarded the project and given a unique opportunity to introduce advanced technologies for commercial application in future offshore wind farms with larger turbines and in deeper waters and to demonstrate the practical value.

The other technologies demonstrated at the Borssele V Site are Thermally Sprayed Aluminium (TSA), Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) optimisation, oval cable entry holes and Eco-friendly scour protection. By demonstrating these technologies, the Borssele V Site contributes to decreasing the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) of offshore wind energy. It is therefore expected that the demonstrated innovations will set a new standard for future foundation designs. The project was only possible through close cooperation between government, industry and scientific research institutes. Once operational in 2021, the 19 MW offshore wind farm will provide sustainable energy to 25,000 households.

Jan De Nul Group and Huisman join forces for the heavy lift equipment on board of next-generation offshore installation vessels Les Alizés and Voltaire

Jan De Nul Group and Huisman announced Wednesday (Apr29) that they have joined forces for the heavy lift equipment on board of Jan De Nul’s Next Generation offshore installation vessels Les Alizés and Voltaire. Upon the order of both vessels in 2019, Jan De Nul Group awarded the contract for the engineering, construction and delivery of two highly innovative cranes to Huisman.

For these cranes, which will be the largest in their class, Huisman developed the Universal Quick Connector (UQC) based on the expertise of Jan De Nul Group’s operational and engineering team. The result is a groundbreaking innovation, resulting in a major step change in safer offshore hoisting activities.

The Universal Quick Connector is a smart, modular and robust clamp which is mounted inside the crane’s lower block. It allows to lift objects through a direct connection, without intermediate rigging and totally hands-free.

Robby De Backer, Director Newbuilding at Jan De Nul Group: “Our newbuilding department has developed the Universal Quick Connector together with Huisman, our trusted partner in pioneering technology. This innovation will considerably increase the safety during offshore lifting and installation activities. With this UQC, we provide our offshore installation teams on board of both vessels with better means to control the lifting operations in a safe way. This will definitely improve and support the offshore installation industry in general.”

Henk Weterings, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Huisman: “We are delighted to have Jan De Nul Group as launching customer for our Universal Quick Connector tool. By refining this concept with the operational and procedural expertise of Jan De Nul’s engineering teams, we have created an integrated tool which will increase safety and workability on board. We envision that this tool will be the first of many in the offshore lifting industry.”
No need for rigging increases safety and workability

The Universal Quick Connector attaches and detaches loads and tools directly to the crane’s lower block without rigging, entirely hands-free and fully automatic. This automated working method creates a safe environment in which the personnel’s safety is not compromised. The complex task of - typically manual assisted - (de)rigging can be prepared outside of the critical path of the lifting operation.

Overall, the UQC also improves workability. Because rigging is no longer needed, the crane fitted with the UQC can optimize available lifting heights and work subsea where traditional equipment encounters difficulties when rigging a load.

Active rotation device improves control of load

The UQC is fitted with an active rotation device increasing operational control when attaching the load. It allows rotation of the load to finetune its orientation without additional taglines. This enables the accurate positioning of heavy components as well as wind turbine components with strict bolt pattern tolerances.

Versatile design offers open interface

The Universal Quick Connector connects to the lifting tool with a specific pin. Any lifting tool fitted with this pin can be used by the UQC. Thanks to its versatile design, the UQC will also be able to hoist existing lifting tools by means of an intermediate lifting eye and pin connection. And if conventional rigging is needed, a traditional hook fitted with the pin can be mounted in the UQC.

Driven by market demands OOS International continues to develop solutions for lifting large, odd shaped structures weighing over 4400t. The unique availability of four identical cranes on board the OOS Serooskerke and OOS Walcheren provide the required capacity and flexibility to perform these lifts.
The OOS Serooskerke and OOS Walcheren are identical sister semi-submersible crane vessels which, due to the unique hull design, are characterised by excellent motion behaviour. Each vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art Dynamic Positioning System and two high capacity Offshore Mast Cranes. Together these characteristics make the OOS Serooskerke and OOS Walcheren the ideal vessel combination to perform parallel lifting operations up to a theoretical 8800t.
